I have an old HP Laserjet series printer from This printer has worked great over the years, however I can’t seem to get my new Windows 10 PC to recognize the printer. If I look in Device Manager, the printer isn’t under the correct heading – it shows up under ‘usb device’. Also when I try and print something from MS Word, the printer does not show up at all.
I’ve spent hours on this and I really need your help! I asked Georges if he would like me to connect to his computer using my remote desktop support service to have a closer look, and he agreed.
Everything Georges said was true. I did more research on the topic and found other people complaining of the same issue. As I mentioned, there are 6 different drivers on the HP Laserjet driver website. I hope that helps – it literally took me 1.
Needless to say, Georges was very happy for my service. I get a lot of email from folks saying that this was the only solution on the Internet that worked. The only way to know is to try it. You would have to visit the HP website and see if there are any drivers listed similarly to what I have mentioned in this post, then try to do what I did. Printing speed is modest, no issue in my SOHO. It might work in win10 too. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my hart for your instructions. I have spent two days trying to install my old printer on a laptop with Windows Your directions were crystal clear.
Needless to say that I have tryied every complicated method you can think off, but the conclusion will always be the same: The best solutions are also the most simple ones.
Thanks again. Win 10 Version – Spring Update has caused many problems for people with older devices, not just printers. Apparently MS made some changes to the “plumbing” requiring updated drivers.
But makers are not updating drivers for “old” devices so we have to dig to find work a-rounds. As well as trying the newest driver, at other times I have found falling back to older drivers or drivers for other similar models may work. Plus I was prepared to try drivers for simple , no DN, and even if I had to. I bought a refurbished computer with Win10 already installed and attempted to run my Hp LaserJet with no success. That was until I found your instructions, Dennis! Thanks and many Blessings upon you!
I thought I’d need to buy a new printer! What I have is working now though! I followed your instructions and Eureka! I’m enjoying printing recipes at present, also a business may be born from this yet! Your article was precise and effective. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with the web! I can’t link directly to the file because they keep changing the version which would make my direct link invalid. During the installation, choose “Traditional printing”. On the next page, choose the last option which allows you to specify the printer port; select the “USB HP dot4” printer port.
If it prints garbage characters, repeat the steps above, but install the PCL6 driver instead : expand the “Driver-Universal Print Driver” heading and grab from there. Did this solution work for you? Remove all instances of the printer including its software. As The Repairatrooper pointed out there could be a purge utility in driver’s unpacked folder. I would then use these two tools to clean system. Run them repeatedly as admin. Do not use any USB hub for the printer. Disable in Windows 10 “Let Windows manage my default printer”. I have to do that on older printers and Windows I installed it, but I don’t think I did it first. But I have un and re-installed the printer driver 4 or 5 times since installing that USB driver.
I recently had an old printer I could never get to work with Windows Plug it into another port and system would see it, no flapping, but wouldn’t work beyond knowing what model printer it was. It’s possible the USB port on the printer was defective as it was hooked up via the parallel port before the computer was replaced. I just replaced it with a new one. What model computer is it?
LaserValley Technologies is an IT service provider. Check the download for a utilities folder and there should be a purge utility. Often with the older HP products you could not reinstall without purging first. Usually the utility is called scrub or scrubber. I cannot tell if you got this message before so I am reposting it here. In regards to the HP Laserjet printer, as with the first situation, my computer recognizes the USB connected Laserjet and tries to install it, which it shows was successful, but it was not.
This printer worked fine before the Windows 10 Professional reinstall that precipitated this problem. Below the printer in printers and devices, it says that the “driver is unavailable” see image.
So there are no drivers to uninstall or reinstall. As you can see, the shows up there but does not show up in Device Manager. When I try to “add printer” and look for the printers that are attached to the computer as above , it does not find the printer. How can this be? Windows update does not find this model. What to do?
